Obituary for Sr. Mary Borromeo Povero

Brighton: Sister M. Borromeo Povero, RSM was called home by her God on October 16, 2017, during her 75th year as a Sister of Mercy. Following graduation from Our Lady of Mercy High School in 1938, she attended Nazareth College, majoring in Latin with a minor in Italian. After graduating Magna cum laude in 1942, she entered the Sister of Mercy. She taught Latin and French at Our Lady of Mercy, Aquinas Institute, St. Ann’s HS, Hornell, Holy Family HS, Auburn and Notre Dame HS, Elmira. She was one of the founding faculty of Notre Dame HS. She also studied and worked at Pineta Sacchetti in Rome, Italy for a year.
In 1991 Sister Borromeo received The Veritas Award for being a very devoted faculty member for over 31 years. She was also selected and recognized in the first edition of “Who’s Who Among American Teachers.”
Survivors include her sisters, Sr. Illaria and Anne Liberatore, nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of Mercy.

Friends are welcome Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Mercy Center, 1437 Blossom Road, where her vigil service will be held at 7 PM. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 AM at Mercy Center. Interment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Sisters of Mercy.
